Within the framework of the excellence cluster Topoi, the Vorderasiatische Museum (VAM/SMB) was running a research program focused on the interface between exhibition concepts and the principal concepts of space in cultural history as well as its material objects of knowledge. The program was divided into two subprojects (SP 1 and SP 2) and combined research on reception history and the implementation of museums as places of mediation (cf. VAM/SP 1: “Containing Space”) with research on the historic core complexes of the museums’ inventories while taking into account innovative approaches to research (cf. VAM/SP 2: “Objects in Space”).
